Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
ICD therapy has become the standard form of treatment for ventricular tachyarrhythmias. With clinical data showing its efficacy in both secondary and primary prevention of premature sudden death, its use is likely to increase dramatically in the next decade. Technological advancement has been instrumental in simplifying ICD implantation. However, technical additions to the device have also made its scope of functions more complex. In addition to providing rapid and effective therapy for ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, the ICD is now capable of providing a full spectrum dual-chamber pacing as well as therapies for atrial fibrillation. Soon, it will also be able to provide treatment for congestive heart failure using multi-site ventricular pacing and provide continuous hemodynamic monitoring. This book serves as an introductory text to those who are relatively new to this technology. In its manual form, it outlines the pertinent components of ICD functions and the basic differences among the various models. It provides practical points in ICD implantation, and in its programming and trouble-shooting.

3 out of 5 stars Good information, remarkably poor writing   December 18, 2003

As a non-electrophysiologist (but physician and biophysicist), needing an understanding of ICD programming, I purchased this book. Judging from the preface, I would have thought I was close to the target reader. I was primarily looking for an explantion of the programming of arrhythmia detection settings. Some, but not all, of the information I need is there.

There is too much historical introduction. When the core concepts arise, there isn't enough explanation. The author assumes arbitrary a priori familiarity with many of the concepts and jargon particular to ICD's. Typical paragraphs dig into details without first explaining the core concepts. In many areas, the prose is annoyingly obscure. The author sometimes provides enough information to figure out what he is saying, but it would have been easier if he had simply explained the concepts in the first place. A trained technical writer, or at least a pre-publication review by a member of the target audience, could have measurably improved this work. ICD manuals are somewhat better written, though necessarily parochial.

It's probably a fairly good book if you already know enough that you don't need it. Unfortunately, I cannot currently suggest a better alternative.

Heartstart Defibrillators - What You Need to Know Before Buying
By Mark Glazer

The Phillips Company manufactures HeartStart defibrillators, one of the AED, or Automatic External Defibrillators. The company produces equipment designed to assist in public safety. Whether it is airbags, fire extinguishers, home security systems, they specialize in devices that protect the average citizen and those they love.

Heart attacks and incidents of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), account for nearly a quarter of a million deaths in the United States every year. What causes them is not completely understood. Very often, the person will have no history of any kind of heart disease, and a SCA can come at any time, in any place, and disable virtually anyone. HeartStart defibrillators are not only the first defibrillator intended for home use without a doctor's prescription; it is currently the only one available. When you consider that every minute after a heart attack or SCA is vital to the patient's survival, having a device that almost any person can operate increases their chance of living. According to medical experts, the first five minutes after the onset of ventricular fibrillation are critical. If a defibrillator is used within that time period, the patient has the best hope of surviving. However, it has been determined that not even one person in twenty survives a SCA due to the fact that a defibrillator is not available in time.

Automated External Defibrillators are intended for use in offices, restaurants, stores, gyms and countless other locations where medical attention can not be provided in a timely fashion. In the case of HeartStart defibrillators, it has a vocal mechanism that gives very clear and precise instructions in a soft voice that talks a person through every step of its use. The device senses the actions of the user and adapts its instructions based on them. HeartStart defibrillators can quickly decide if a shock even needs to be carried out. If it determines that an electrical jolt is not needed, it can then walk the user through all of the steps of CPR. The machine is powerful and versatile, and a useful weapon in the fight against the ravages of heart disease.

Many smart people have purchased a home defibrillator. Visit AED Defibrillator Information to learn what the Phillips defibrillator has to offer that others don't.
